Message from the President My
apologies that no e-news was sent out last month. My travels were
however great and I managed to fly to Europe, participate in some big
events and fly home again without either Louise or myself catching Covid
or losing our luggage!
The news that affects all those living in Hornsby Shire is that Council
is considering an application to increase the rates that land owners
pay. This proposed increase will be over and above the already planned
and approved increase. At our last Director’s meeting we met with the
General Manager of Council to obtain a briefing on why Council considers
a further rate rise to be essential. To fulfill our objective of making
available to you information that is relevant to where we live, we have
combined with Pennant Hills Civic Trust and Westleigh Progress
Association to hold a public meeting on Thursday 13 October 2022 at
which Council officers will make a presentation and answer questions.
Details of this meeting are elsewhere in this bulletin. It would be good
to see you there.
Despite contact immediately before my travels , and then again on my
return, we have not heard anything further from our local State Member
about what is happening about the M2 noise. I cannot therefore report on
the outcomes of our representations to our State Member, even though
these representations had produced an agreed and sensible course of
action. This is disappointing. We will have an extraordinary
Director’s meeting to plan what we do next in light of this lack of
response. In this e-news we have included a survey question on the M2 to
assist in our advocacy.
Since my return we have continued to have torrential rain. The silver
lining to these rain clouds is that the work done by the railway to
manage water flow on the Sutherland Road side of the railway underpass
worked. No flooding of the underpass entry happened. Thank you to all
who support our requests to have this work done.
Another project that has been successfully concluded is the restoration
of the Caddy Memorial Seat in Malton Road. The seat was originally built
in 1929 by resident subscription. Its history can be read on the

Thanks to Hornsby Shire Council and the Thornleigh Men’s Shed. Once
again it has become a fine place to rest and contemplate valley views –
we just need to be ever vigilant about that spreading bamboo.
Two other local community activities are worth drawing to your
attention. Spring has come amongst the rain and the Railway Reserve
Gardens are looking lovely. Thanks to the Beecroft and District Garden
Club members who work on caring for this garden. You do a fantastic job
that the rest of us enjoy.
Our local Rotary Club continues to be active. A little while ago I
bought a stack of aeroplane reading at the book store in Hannah Street.
It has such an eclectic library of books for sale at ridiculously low
prices. Details of Rotary’s Living Treasures award and events to support
senior members of our community also appear elsewhere in this e-news. I
was going to make reference to ‘mature’ community members but my wife
has pointed out that even though my age is right, there is no objective
evidence that I have reached any level of maturity.
Our neighbouring Epping Civic Trust has recently had a change in
Presidency with Janet McGarry re-locating for a period to England.
Judith Dawes has stepped up as President and we extend to Judith our
good wishes. To Janet we say thanks for her considerable efforts while
President. Janet worked very hard for her community in a time of much
change in Epping. Thanks for this and we wish her well in the future.
While this is our loss, England clearly now needs lots of good people.

Civic Trust Spring Walk on Sunday October 16th The Trust will be holding its traditional Spring Walk this year on Sunday 16th October 2022. The walk will commence at 2pm from the end of Day Rd Cheltenham.
The walk will be in the Lane Cove National Park following Devlins Creek,
passing under the M2 and the train line. We will return via
Sutherland and Cobram Roads, back to Day Road.
The Beecroft Cheltenham History Group will be provide a short talk on a
aspects of our local history. We will end up the state heritage
listed property of Marie Byles, Ahimsa, now in National Trust ownership.
Walkers are welcome to stop at Ahimsa for a chat and afternoon tea.

BushCare Volunteers Our Bushcare volunteers continue to do a wonderful job getting rid of weeds and regenerating badly degraded bushland.
The Chilworth Reserve volunteers really appreciate the new beautifully
crafted table and chairs provided at the bottom of Kenwick Lane by
Hornsby Council.

Public Meeting to Discuss Hornsby Shire Rate Increase. The
Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust, the Pennant Hills Civic Trust and the
Westleigh Progress Association have combined to hold a public meeting on
Thursday 13 October 2022 at which Council officers will make a
presentation and answer questions about a future rate increase.
The meeting will be held at 7pm on Thursday 13 October at the; Pennant Hills Baptist Church
